Carmel Valley Shops and Street Index

Carmel got it's name when Spanish explorers came upon the river valley in 1602. Sebastian Vizcaina named it "El Rio Carmelo" in honor of the Carmelite friars accompanying him. The Ohlone Indians who inhabited the area supplied the enforced labor to build the Carmel Mission starting in 1771. As the town of Carmel grew, the Indians fled South and East and mostly didn't survive.

As Carmel-by-the-Sea grew, ranchers settled along the beautiful river, developing the Valley communities. The fertile soil and warm climate lent itself to vineyards supporting some of the finest California vintners.

Now Carmel Valley is a charming mix of wine tasting rooms, unique art and antique shops. The twelve miles stretch from the mouth of the valley to Carmel Valley Village is filled with nurseries, horse ranches and mountain
vistas. Unique inns and lodges as well as fine restaurants await the traveler.
