Monterey Shops and Street Index

Monterey is a treasure trove of historical buildings and visitors can take a walking tour from the Royal Presdio Chapel, built in 1794 by the Spanish Government to California's First Theater built in the 1840s. The Custom House, close to the wharf, was used by the Mexican Government for trade but was taken over by the U.S. Government when, in 1846, Commodore Sloat officially took claim. A stone pier on the beach was been built in 1848 and later changed to a commercial fishing wharf in 1900. This is still a working wharf with stalls that sell the day's catch or boats that will take people fishing or whale watching.

There are many old houses, including one where Robert Louis Stevenson lived, that are part of the historic tour but Cannery Row always draws the visitors. Flourishing canneries in the end of the 1800s and early 1900s were devastated when the over-fished sardines ran out. The flavor of the old cannery has been kept while the lovely hotels and charming galleries and shops now adorn the Cannery Row. The crowning jewel of Monterey is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a must for every visitor.
